His Excellency President Dr Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi says more needs to be done to advance women in all sporting codes.

Speaking at a brunch hosted to appreciate the Senior Women National Football Team “The Mares”, the President said “Government commits to availing necessary resources for talent identification, nurturing and ensuring that our women footballers are ready to compete at the highest levels, and even turn professional.”

He added that the transfer of the Department of Gender Affairs to the Ministry formerly known as Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development was a deliberate move and choice by Government to achieve gender parity and equity in sport.

He said there was a need for more engagements and interactions in terms of how to develop a systematic programme geared specifically at advancing women.

The President further challenged the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to establish structures to develop and administer a womenā€™s football league that is managed with similar impetus as the menā€™s league, if not better.

BFA revelead that the prize money from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations close to P2million would all go towards the players. The minister of Youth, Gender Sports and Culture Honourable Tumiso Rakgare said the government had put P7million towards the Mares from preparations for the WAFCON to date, inclusive of P20 000 allowance for each player.
