Job Summary

To contribute to the education of the whole child, attending to the intellectual, emotional, physical and social development

Minimum requirements

  • Diploma in Special Education
  • 3 years post qualification experience as a Special Education Teacher

Key Effectiveness Areas

  • Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets and controls expenditure within approved parameters.
  • Administer tests for learners i.e. performing continuous assessments in order to monitor the special education learners’ progress.
  • Draws up yearly, termly and weekly plans of subject matters by complying with school subject policies
  • Prepares individualised lesson plans to achieve the desired objectives taking cognisance of available resources and equipment by providing suitable teaching aids/material e.g. audio or visual aids, instruments and tools
  • Provides an effective and stimulating environment for education by maintaining teaching area in a neat orderly condition
  • Teaches various handwork skills suitable to learners’ ability level, groups and individuals
  • Assess the learner’s motor development and takes corrective action or refers to Occupational Therapist for psychological assessment, ear and eye screening for further assessment and treatment.
  • Researches the market to keep abreast with industry best practices in the field of special education.
  • Complies with all requirements pertaining to the teaching profession
  • Observes the learners at work and at play in order to establish the sociological and physical development
  • Facilitates peer-teaching training and plans further afternoon training sessions for teachers and needy pupils
  • Interviews prospective parents and counsels them on their children who are referred to the special class and conducts annual parent orientation meetings to inform them of needs and requirements expected of them as partners.
  • Performs an array of administrative duties including keeping accurate records and inventory of special education equipment and keeping children’s progress reports.
  • Implements safety, Health & environment programmes in the area of responsibility taking cognizance of all legal requirements
